Attacks should make Kenyans more determined to win war against terror
Sunday’s grenade attack in Eastleigh, which claimed seven lives and maimed a lot more, must be expressly condemned.
Unfortunately, it confirms the perception that our country is increasingly becoming unsafe, with everybody becoming more and more vulnerable, whether they are on the streets, in places of worship, or even in their homes.
Recently, we celebrated the capture of the Somali port city of Kismayu by the Kenya Defence Forces. We saw this feat as a milestone in our country’s sustained fight against terrorism in the region.
The grenade and gun attacks being witnessed in Garissa and Nairobi are closely connected to our troops’ involvement in Somalia.
During the initial stages of KDF’s engagement in Somalia, the Al-Shabaab brazenly warned that if Kenya ever dared to launch any form of attack on the militia, they would bring the war to our door-step by targeting buildings.
We called their bluff when Operation Linda Nchi was launched. Now our chickens have come home to roost.
Our troops’ victory in the war against terrorism now seems diminished. The victory in Somalia is just one battle won, but the war must continue in earnest if we are to realise any meaningful success.
Terrorism is that hydra-headed monster. You chop one of its heads, another one continues to grow. You have to crush it completely.
All this doesn’t mean that we should despair and look helpless before the enemy. What our security agencies are doing must continue and must be supported by every patriotic citizen.
Granted, our security agents might be having their hands full, especially following the recent police killings in Samburu, but a more focused approach needs to be employed in the war against terror.
Right now, there is a very clear and present danger of the country getting polarised along religious lines because of the perceived identities of the perpetrators of these terrorist attacks.
But we cannot afford to let our country go this way. Everything necessary must be done to defuse the tension, especially now that the country is heading towards the General Election.
